Introducing Crete
Crete is the largest of all the Greek islands, meaning it has lots to offer. From developed tourist areas with resort hotels, nightlife and bars there are also quiet coves, hidden beaches and culture to reward the more discerning traveller.
The Best time to visit Crete
May and early June are particularly good times to visit Crete as well as September. The summer months are good but you will be competing with millions of other tourists so if its relaxation and seclusion you are after, summer may not be the best time for your to visit, indeed the temperature can reach up to the mid 30's during July and August, which for many is another good reason to visit the island earlier or later in the year as the temperature is still good, but becomes more bearable.
The Meltemi (Northen winds) pick up between mid-june and the end of August and can become uncomfortable, but they do provide some relief from the intense summer heat. This time of year is ideal for surfing, body boarding and wind surfing as the wind whips up waves that are larger than usual, often making swimming in the sea a little more challenging!
Shopping in Crete
The shopping in Crete is excellent and is definitely an experience not to be missed! You will find a wide range of village shops and markets, all selling a range of local goods including crafted leather, copper, bronze, terracotta and wood. Exploring the larger towns will reveal streets lined with boutiques selling everything from designer handbags through to original jewellery and folk art. Crete's olive oil is amongst the best in the world so don't forget to give it a try!
