Climate & Seasons

The Caribbean islands lie within the tropics, and despite the vast region over which the different islands are situated, the climate and conditions for all of them are extremely similar. The waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea are warm at all times of the year and attract visitors from all over the world.

The best time to visit is during the winter, when the islands boast warm and sunny days, and there is very little rainfall, apart from the occasional short, sharp shower in late afternoon or evening. Summers are notoriously hot and you could expect some rain.  Hurricane season runs from June to November, with most occurring during the month of September. Temperatures in the summer can reach up to 32c on the islands of Jamaica and Trinidad.

There is however, minimal temperature variation from season to season due to the steady northeastern trade winds that hit the islands. Temperatures range from 24c between January and February and 29c in July and August.

Flora & Fauna

Excellent beaches, mountain scenery, orchids and exotic plants, plus tropical flower-lined roadsides describes the flora & fauna of the Caribbean. The islands are renowned for their beautiful, powdery beaches and sparkling blue waters, but the interiors of these tropical isles are fascinating worlds of their own.

Tiny jewel-like hummingbirds, fragile orchids, exotic plants and fruits, the popularity of ecotourism is growing, and many Caribbean islands are adding walking and hiking trails that add another dimension to an island visit.

The entire Caribbean Islands total landmass is around 90,000 square miles and is almost equally divided between the hills and the valleys. There are beautiful natural rocks, swamps of mangroves, coral reefs, a few active volcanoes and sand dunes.

There are a diverse and colourful collection of trees and tropical flowers to be found in the region including many varieties of Hibiscus, Cordia and Allamanda flowers, etc.

The ubiquitous coconut palm tree lines the white sand beaches of the Caribbean islands as well as some more unusual trees such as the Calabash tree or the interestingly named Cannonball tree.
