All Caribbean islands are beautiful, but there’s something different about Tobago. A holiday here will rejuvenate and revitalize and you will come home feeling great to be alive!
The island provides a much more relaxed introduction to the Caribbean. The pace of life here is slower. There are established yet not crowded resorts but away on the western end of the island are plenty of secluded coves and bays where you can while away the hours in the ocean and relax in the glorious sun in classic Caribbean fashion.

Other than the beautiful beaches, clear waters and smart hotels, Eco-tourists will find rivers, waterfalls and natural reserves and a rich bird life, as well as underwater dives to see the mysteriously beautiful manta-rays.
Tobago is very different to her sister Isle. The island is so beautiful and fertile that just about every western European colonial power has fought to have it. It is a tranquil island with calm waters and many fine beaches which include Pigeon Point on the southwest coast. Buccoo Reef, an extensive coral reef, lies offshore and offers fantastic diving.p |
Despite being a tiny island, it isn't difficult to find a beach to yourself on Tobago. Not because there are so many of them but because this is still a largely unspoilt left untouched by the masses. You won't get to all of Tobago's beaches in a fortnight holiday and the majority of them are untouched, with no facilities. Fabulous! Popular doesn't mean they're busy. On a lot of days, it could just be you and a few parrots..!
The home of carnival, steel bands, calypso and limbo dancing, Tobago and her sister Island, Trinidad has a blend of different cultures which give them an air of cosmopolitan excitement. “Liming” or talking for talking's sake is a popular pastime, as is ‘chatting about’, or watching and playing cricket. Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean, thanks to its considerable reserves of gas and oil.

The small village of Buccoo comes alive on Sunday night for the weekly Sunday School. No bible readings or gospel singing though, just eating, drinking, music, dancing, liming and more dancing at this lively street party which lasts till the early hours and everybody is invited!
You really are spoilt for choice on Tobago and the holiday photos will look fabulous! |
The choice of hotels is excellent be it small and intimate or larger with more facilities. Tobago will not disappoint you!
Climate
Warm and sunny with fresh trade winds.
Average temperature: 30C (86F)
The sea can be as warm as your bath, and is warmest in the rainy season. Try jumping into the sea during a short tropical rain shower on the beach! For more information about the cliamte in the Caribbean click here
Flights & Transport

Getting around the island is relatively easy. You can hire a jeep for around £40 a day. Petrol is very, very cheap, less than 30p per gallon, but there are few petrol stations so don’t get caught out - refuel regularly.
You’ll need a valid, full driving licence. Drive on the left and beware, there is a 30 mph (50 kph) speed limit throughout Tobago.
There are buses - you have to purchase a ticket in advance from local stores. |
One of the best ways of getting around is to pick up an ‘unofficial taxi’, or a maxi taxi. Tobago has a regulated taxi service that charges about the same as you’d pay back at home, but there is a network of unofficial taxis that seem to operate under a ‘blind eye’ system and it’s a bit like thumbing a lift. A short ‘hop’ will cost you no more than 2 dollars - 20p - and you’ll be entertained on the way aswell.
Official taxis can be spotted with a registration letter ‘H’
The Trinidad & Tobago Dollar (TT$) is the local currency in Tobago but many establishments will accept payments in US Dollars with change being given in local currency.
For any traveller leaving these Islands, there is a mandatory TT$100 (about £9) per person airport departure tax to be paid. Children aged 5 years or less are exempt.
